In OMORI quests are elements of the game that sometimes are necesary for progression.

if a npc shows a white lighthing bulb that means that they will give you a quest if you talk to them, after accepting the quest or just talking to them three ... will appear meaning that you accepted the quest and that you can now do it. When black lightbulb appears that means that you have completed the quest and that if you talk again with them they will give you a reward. After you finish talking a sound can be heard and meaning that you succesfully completed the quest.

Quests can be viewed by talking to MARI which will show the progress of the quest and whether they are complete or incomplete sometimes having extra dialogue each time you make some progress in the quest.

Quests can be divided between side quests and main quests, main quests are necesary for the game to progress, so you will have to complete them to advance in the story, in the other hand side quests are not necesary and can be completly ignored, but they will give prizes if you complete them, some side quest are more difficult or long than others so each one will have different rewards for doing them.
