Omori is the titular deuteragonist in OMORI. Omori can be controlled by the player during the night, where Headspace can be explored. When Omori is in the lead, he can cut down obstacles with his knife.

Profile

Appearance

Omori wears a black tank top, long black socks, and black and white striped shorts. He is the only character to be colored black and white in contrast with the colorful dream world.

Personality

Omori's personality is generally left up to player interpretation, due to him being a silent protagonist. However, he makes a significant amount of comments within the Foe Facts! journal. In the journal, while he is generally only describing the foe, he occasionally makes a snarky comment.

Story

At some point following Mari's death, Sunny presumably began visiting Headspace as Omori. The origins of Omori are not fully clarified, although it is heavily implied through one of the cutscenes[1] that Sunny originally manifested as himself in White Space, but eventually manifested Omori, and was no longer able/willing to enter White Space as himself. From the door appearing after this happens, this presumably also unlocked the rest of Headspace.

Inside Headspace, Omori can freely visit a dream world where his friends reside along with what appear to be representations of his acquaintances and fictional mascots. The entire Headspace appears to exist solely as a way to escape from Mari's death and its consequences for Sunny/Omori, as within Headspace, Mari is still alive and all of his friends are still with him, all of them being exactly the same as they were before Mari's death. Throughout the game, it is implied that this is either a consequence of or the reason behind his isolation during the four years in between Mari's death and the start of the game.

Normal route

As the story progresses, Omori appears to change from merely a persona adopted by Sunny within Headspace to a completely different entity, perhaps a split personality of sorts. This culminates in the final battle of the game, where following his fight with Basil, Sunny enters White Space as himself and sees Omori wielding his signature kitchen knife. The battle consists of six phases, with progressively increasing difficulty, and the background changing to increasingly disturbing images as well as music and sounds. The player only needs to reach the fourth phase in order to progress. If the player dies past this point, there are two possible endings, depending on what they choose:

  • Good Ending: If the player chooses to continue, Sunny stands back up, and begins to play a duet with Mari, giving the player a cutscene showing parts of Sunny's childhood. After this, another cutscene plays wherein Omori hugs Sunny and drops his knife, before disappearing. After this, the player wakes up in a hospital, and meets all his friends in Basil's own hospital room, presumably confessing the truth about Mari's death.
  • Bad Ending: If the player chooses not to continue, the cutscene in which Omori hugs Sunny plays, except that this time Sunny drops his violin and disappears instead of Omori. This results in Omori waking up in White Space again. When they enter the Neighbor's Room, all of his friends are unusually quiet and simply run up to him. When they exit the room, Sunny appears on what appears to be the Hospital's roof, alone, in a hospital gone, and with his eye bandaged. Following this, he jumps off the building, and the credits play.

Hikikomori route

The plot is notably changed as Sunny represses more memories of Mari's death as he chooses to shut himself away even more than before. By the time Omori arrives in Black Space, he slowly begins to take over Sunny's mind and body. However, Stranger and Something attempt to stop Sunny from submerging himself further into his dream world of escapism. Sunny tries to fight off Stranger but fails as the shadowy figure overwhelms him, leading him to be transported into Red Space, where Omori awaits him on his throne of hands.

From there, Omori descends from his throne and helps Sunny withstand Stranger's wrath. The battle ultimately ends with Stranger fading away, allowing Omori to rescue Basil in the Church Of Something. Omori and Basil leave Black Space and return to Neighbor's Bedroom, where their friends are sleeping in their beds.

Once Omori and Basil fall asleep, as instructed by the Big Yellow Cat, this causes Headspace to be reset. This leads to the first few minutes of the game to be somewhat repeated with few changes: Basil appears to have never discovered the truth, more areas are expanded, and more optional sidequests are available for Omori and friends.

Sunny eventually wakes up, only to find Something following him at every step of his house. Being unable to suppress Something's presence, Sunny succumbs further into his self-hate and guilt. If Sunny chooses to go back to sleep, he ends up overwhelmed by his traumatic memories of the past. Omori then decides to "save" Sunny from being fully consumed by his trauma. However, Omori assumes complete control over the Sunny's body causing the latter to cease to exist as he resigns himself to a never-ending cycle of dreaming forever and unable to face the truth.

After waking up once more, there are two possible endings that can be achieved. If Sunny goes to sleep, he will wake up and leave the house with Something following him, ending with the credits rolling and the sound of sirens, possibly implying that Basil's suicide still happened in this route. Another option is for the player to go into the menu and use the stab function, causing Omori to stab Sunny and commit suicide.
